Sankofa Songs! Inc. Presents:

Africentric Arts Educators Professional Development Fellowships

Boston, Massachusetts: The Sankofa Songs! Inc. Board of Directors announces Mariana Green Hill, string pedagogue and violinist, as the first recipient of our Africentric Arts Educators Fellowship. A demonstrated Africentric music educator and distinguished performer, Ms. Green Hill will conduct primary source field research that examines relationships between Caribbean traditional musics and the compositions of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges. Ms. Green Hill will visit the plantation in Guadeloupe where the Chevalier was raised as well as learn traditional songs and culturally grounded instrument performance techniques. She will present her research in an upcoming Sankofa Songs forum.

Sankofa Songs’ Africentric Arts Educators Fellowships are awarded annually. Arts educators interested in applying for our Fellowships must demonstrate effective experience engaging the Africentric Arts Education Framework. Applicants must be practicing arts educators who outline a professional development project that provides them resources and/or experiences that will deepen their Africentric arts teaching.

Africentric arts education is for everyone; teachers and students of all races, ethnicities, and cultures can learn and benefit from these unique Africa-descended peoples’ practices. Engaging the Africentric arts education perspective expands contemporary notions of multiculturalism, diversity-equity-inclusion (DEI), and socio-emotional learning (SEL). It motivates students and inspires teachers. Africentric arts educators demonstrate ‘pedagogy in the key of humanity.’
